Louise Cottam I know how you felt. When Mum got dementia I looked after her 24/7, for 6 years. As I had retired 2 years before becoming a Carer, I wasn’t entitled to the Carers’ allowance. You lose your social life, though in the early days a friend would sit with her for a few hours if I needed to attend a Carer’s course or go to a friend’s funeral. As my daughter and family live abroad, I did insist on going over each year so that friend and my brother,who was working full time, took care of her. The last 2 years we paid for Fuzetees - Baby Yoda Penguin and BB-8 Star Wars Shirt weeks respite care for her while I went away (very expensive) but for my own health I had to take those breaks. When she died I had to get out and about and build up my circle of friends and activities, but if I could go back in time, I would do it all again as she was my Mum.
